报告题目：The Role of the OceanObs Conference Series in Advancing Global Ocean Observations

报告人简介：Nicholas (Nick) Rome is a highly skilled program leader with extensive experience coordinating complex ocean observing initiatives and securing funding from federal and non-federal sources. As the Senior Program Manager at UCAR's Center for Ocean Leadership (COL), Nick oversees a diverse portfolio of ocean observing programs, acting as Principal Investigator for NOAA, NASA, and other high-profile projects. His strategic approach to fostering partnerships and facilitating high-level conversations has advanced numerous initiatives in the oceanographic field. Nick has played a crucial role in convening international discussions, such as those related to the OceanObs decadal conference and various UN Ocean Decade programs, and has been instrumental in aligning COL’s objectives with global ocean observation priorities. His accomplishments include securing cooperative agreements, organizing influential workshops, and leading strategic planning sessions promoting collaboration and innovation. With a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, Nick nurtures his team and works closely with stakeholders to ensure that the programs he leads make lasting contributions to ocean science and technology. Nick holds a Master’s in International Environmental Policy from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and a Bachelor’s in Applied Biological Sciences from Arizona State University.

报告摘要：This presentation will explore the historical significance and evolution of the OceanObs conference series, which has shaped global ocean observation efforts over the past several decades. A particular focus will be placed on the most recent conference, OceanObs’19, which brought together over 1,500 participants from more than 60 countries to advance ocean observing initiatives. It will delve into its key themes—such as data integration, technology innovation, and international collaboration—and the collaborative process that produced over 140 white papers and numerous outcomes. These contributions set the stage for the UN Ocean Decade and helped define its ambitious challenges for the global ocean science community. We will also touch on the formation of key committees and the broad engagement of stakeholders in shaping the future of ocean observations. Finally, we will briefly introduce the upcoming OceanObs’29, set to be held in Qingdao, China, outlining its strategic goals and the importance of continuity in global collaboration as we look to the next decade of ocean observation.
