报告题目:Observation of ocean color: Benefit of Lidar Technique

Passive remote sensing of the ocean color has changed our vision of the distribution of the phytoplankton and other optically active constituents in the ocean. However, these observations have limitations as they cannot be obtained under clouds, under absorbing aerosols, at high latitudes, during the night, or over the vertical in the ocean. To overcome those limitations, lidars have been used, and led to many ocean discoveries despite not having an ocean optimized lidar satellite mission. To increase lidar literacy for the ocean community, it is necessary to provide comprehensive background and training on the technique but also on the ways to process the lidar signal. International efforts have developed lately in the form of an International Team at the International Space Sciences Institute. After a brief presentation of my laboratory and team in France, I will present the progress made worldwide about oceanic profiling lidar from different platforms with an emphasize on the possibility to hack past and current space borne lidars. I will showcase how lidar can be beneficial to explore the vertical structure of the upper ocean. Finally,I will provide key points about the current international collaborations and about the way to promote oceanic profiling lidar in the ocean color community.

报告摘要:

Space-borne lidar presents a strong potential for the future of ocean observations with depth-resolved measurements, overcoming some limitations of the conventional passive ocean color remote sensing and complementing them. Measurements from lidar sensors such as CALIOP.

were recently used to retrieve the particulate back-scattering coefficient, bbp, despite the sensor originally being designed for atmospheric studies.

It is important to validate the space-borne lidar measurements for ocean applications. Few studies validated the CALIOP ocean products, but each of them designed its own evaluation scheme. However, it is also critical to have a standardized evaluation scheme for these studies to be compared across time, geography, and sensors. Here we propose an objective evaluation scheme that could be applied to any current and future space-borne lidars for ocean applications.

We tested twenty combinations of distance (from 9-km to 50-km) and time (from 9 h to 16 days) differences and a statistical score was used to objectively select the best optimal time-distance window, leading to the best compromise in term of number of match-ups and low errors in the CALIOP product. Based on this, we propose to use either a 24 h/9 km or 24 h/15 km window for the evaluation of space-borne lidar oceanic products.
