报告题目:Biogeochemical (BGC) Argo improves understanding and quantification of the ocean’s biological carbon pump

报告人简介:汪斌,加拿大达尔豪斯大学海洋系博士后。2022年获加拿大达尔豪斯大学海洋系博士学位,现就职于加拿大达尔豪斯大学海洋系。汪斌博士的研究内容包括海洋生物泵过程,基于海洋的碳移除技术,以及近岸河口的富营养化和缺氧等环境问题。研究特色为结合当下前沿的自动化生物浮标观测数据和数值模型,利用如数据同化等方法,来提高对海洋生物泵等过程的估算与认识。迄今为止以第一作者身份在Limnology and Oceanography, Geophysical Research Letters, Biogeosciences, Ocean Science 等国际知名SCI期刊发表论文多篇,论文被引累计100余次,同时担任多个国际主流学术期刊审稿人。

报告摘要:The ocean’s biological carbon pump (BCP) contributes to the sequestration of organic carbon in the deep ocean and influences atmospheric CO2 levels. Despite its significance, the BCP remains poorly characterized due to insufficient observations. Recent advances of Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) program have greatly increased the availability of biogeochemical observations. This motivates us to explore their additional values for improving estimates and our understanding of the BCP by performing comprehensive analyses of high-frequency BGC-Argo observations, and by exploring their synergies with biogeochemical models. Results show that the gravitational sinking flux of large particles is the most important mechanism. At the same time, small particles also make a significant contribution to the BCP at 100 m through gravitational settling and other mechanisms and at 600 m due to fragmentation of large particles. We also find that the BGC-Argo observations of POC concentration are an important complement to currently sparse in-situ observations of POC flux for improving estimates of the BCP by informing us the appropriate parameterization schemes and optimizing key parameters.
