  • Research Interest

    Dake Chen received his Ph.D. in physical oceanography in 1989 from State University of New York at Stony Brook. Then he worked at University of Rhode Island before joining the faculty of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University in 1995. He was a Doherty Senior Scientist/Lamont Research Professor at LDEO from 1999 to 2013, and the director of State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics from 2006 to 2016. He was elected an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015.
    He has a broad range of research interest, with significant achievements in the areas of coastal ocean dynamics, large-scale ocean circulation as well as climate variability. In particular, he has made systematic, innovative contributions to our understanding of ENSO prediction and predictability, oceanic turbulent mixing, and ocean-typhoon interaction. So far, he has published over 200 scientific papers and technical reports, including articles in Nature and Science. He has been the chief scientist of two national “973” projects and several NSFC key projects, and is serving in many scientific organizations, committees, and editorial boards, playing an instrumental role in promoting national and international programs of oceanic research.
