Marine Carbon from Space (SatCO2): Joint Science Workshop and Training Held

On December 12th, Marine Carbon from Space (SatCO2): Joint Science Workshop and Training was held by the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics (SOED). The main theme of the Workshop is marine carbon cycle and ocean acidification, which have attracted intensive attention around the world in recent years. The Workshop has attracted over 130 scientists 15 nations and regions, e.g. Bangladesh, Kampuchea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Norway, Pakistan, Niger, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan and the United States, etc. Academician PAN Delu, Director of SOED Professor Chai Fei and Chen-Tung Arthur Chen of National Sun Yat-sen University co-chaired the Workshop.

    The first two days of SatCO2 were academic workshops, including 8 keynote speeches and 17 normal speeches, which promote the understanding of attendees and pave the technical way for further international cooperation. During the Workshop, the Panel Discussion group composed by 10 distinguished scientists from different countries launched a heated discussion on “Opportunities of Collaboration” and identified several key international cooperation aspirations.

The last three days of SatCO2 were advanced training courses. First of all, five reports on marine carbon chemistry, remote sensing inversion of oceanic carbon parameter, remote sensing data analysis of long time series, remote sensing monitoring of marine red tide, and the introduction of the functions of SatCO2 software developed by SOED. SOED prepared 18 computers with the installation of the SatCO2 software in English version and CO2SYS software for training.

    Motivated by vital national needs for protecting maritime rights and interests and for disaster prevention and mitigation, and with the goals of improving technology and theory used for establishing three-dimensional marine environmental monitoring and prediction systems, staff at SOED carries out research on satellite marine environment dynamics, with an emphasis on application. The lab creates unique marine science and technology platform with distinctive international influences. There are three main research themes at SOED: Technology and Application of Satellite Remote Sensing, Ocean Dynamic Processes and Ecosystems, Ocean Circulation and Climate Change. And there are four public platforms: Satellite Ground Station, Argo Data Center, Marine Instrument Sharing Platform, and Computer Center. These public platforms serve marine observation data not only to researchers but also to marine laboratories nationwide.

    In order to promote remote sensing data to a wider range, SOED Laboratories and Zhejiang University team have developed a free sharing of SatCO2 (ocean carbon cycle remote sensing) software for multidisciplinary researchers, especially non-remote sensing professionals Facilitate the application of remote sensing data and development. Satell2 software can be used to link SOED laboratory data center, according to the latest research results produced by a variety of professional remote sensing data sets, combined with the user's native data, in three-dimensional visualization of the Earth data analysis, and ocean carbon flux estimates. The software is still in the development stage, but also according to user needs and new research results continue to update and adjust the training course is SatCO2 software beta version of the first public appearance. Researchers can obtain up-to-date information on software and database updates through the SOED lab website, the SOED micro signal public number, and the SatCO2 e-mail (satco2@sio.org.cn) and the QQ group (419021880), and offer software feedback and functionality demand.
